Creative heritage of V.I. Vernadsky in the investigation of science and its organization: from the past though the present - to the future, XXV Kiev International Symposium on Science of Science and History of Science, October 18-19, 2012

05.11.2012

"In every philosophical system, undoubtedly, reflected the mood of soul of its creator,"
Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky
(March 12, 1863 - January 6, 1945)

There are thinkers, whose impact on scientific and philosophical activity goes far beyond specific sciences and specialized disciplines, beyond the framework of their time. Strange as it may seem, every self-respecting modern manager, top manager, specialist of an enterprise of minerals extraction, or a bank clerk, or IT company worker, or a representative of any other sphere of human activity must be aware of the philosophical content of Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky ideas, that affect the basis of personal responsibility for the results of human influence on nature around us, technique, technology, information, the future. Vladimir Ivanovich Vernadsky (March 12, 1863 {February 28, 1863 according to the Julian calendar}, St. Petersburg - January 6, 1945, Moscow) - a prominent Russian, Ukrainian scientist, naturalist, philosopher and social activist, creator of many scientific schools, academician of the Imperial St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences (since 1917 - Russian Academy of Sciences, since 1925 – USSR Academy of Sciences) and many others, including foreign Academies, one of the founders and the first president of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, one of the representatives of Russian cosmism, the founder of modern complex of Sciences about the Earth - geochemistry, biogeochemistry, radio-geology, creator of holistic teaching about biosphere and its evolution and transformation under the influence of man  on noosphere. His interests included geology and crystallography, mineralogy and geochemistry, organizing activities in science and social work, radio-geology and biology, biogeochemistry and philosophy. Vernadsky's activity has had a huge impact on the development of the Earth, the formation and growth of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, on the world view of many people who got acquainted with his writings (more than 700). V.I. Vernadsky, as a scientist, was brought up in the atmosphere of scientific conception of Man and Nature unity, of Man as an active environmental factor.

The life and work of Vernadsky family was most closely linked to Russia (St. Petersburg, Moscow, Tambov province) and Ukraine (Kiev, Kharkov, Poltava province, Simferopol). The origins of his kin - descendants of Ukrainian Cossacks on the paternal branch, leaved in the middle of the 17th century, when Vernadsky’s ancestors participated in Bogdan Khmelnitsky campaigns, and in the mid-19th century, after Suvorov campaign, Vernadsky’s grandfather Vasily, settled in Kiev. There was born his father - Ivan (1821 - 1884) and his mother - Anna Petrovna (born in 1837) – a daughter of Ukrainian nobleman.

In Vernadsky’s writings a number of specific conditions required for the formation and existence of noosphere were shown:
1.   populating of the planet by humanity,
2.   drastic transformation of communication and exchange between different countries,
3.   strengthening of ties, including political, among all nations of the Earth,
4.   predominance of geological role of a man over other geological processes in the biosphere,
5.   expansion of boundaries of the biosphere and exit into Space,
6.   discovery of new sources of energy,
7.   equality of people of all races and religions,
8.   extension of the role of masses in the matters of foreign and domestic policy,
9.   freedom of scientific thought and scientific searching from the pressure of religious, philosophical and political building and the creation favorable conditions in social and political system for free scientific thought,
10. raise of working class well-being, creation a real opportunity for the prevention of malnutrition and hunger, poverty, reduction of disease impact,
11. rational transformation of primary nature of the Earth in order to make it capable to comply with all the material, aesthetic, and spiritual needs of population, that is growing  numerically,
12. eliminating of wars from the life of society.

The latter condition Vernadsky considered as the most important for the creation and existence of the noosphere.

Many of Vernadsky’s ideas proved to be prophetic. Not always he found understanding with his contemporaries, but after the Second World War people got into space and into the depths of the Earth. The creation of aviation, computers and computer networks united the world and empower everyone to receive information. But at the same time a man intensely polluted the surrounding nature, soil, water and atmosphere. Ecological problems appeared now, possibility of which no one thought about in the beginning of XX century. "In the geological history of the biosphere a great future is opening to a man if he will understand this and will not use his mind and his labor for self-destruction" - wrote V.I. Vernadsky in his "Scientific thought as a planetary phenomenon."
